Floors for Singapore homes · with Ben & Belle

Find a floor you'll still love at 9pm.

Pick the material, then the colour, then watch it from morning to night in a 3D HDB living room. The price comes last.

  1. The material. Seven floors, and what each one copes with.

  2. The colour. Tones that suit your light and what's staying.

  3. The light. Morning, 5pm and night, before you choose.

  4. The people. Registry-checked firms, and showrooms to stand in.

BenMatch the floor to the fur. A darker floor hides dark hair. Walnut vinyl, textured, S$5,100 to S$6,800 for the whole 85 sqm.
BelleWalnut and a washable runner where the dog does its zoomies.

Floors · the material and the colour

Your life picks the floor. Five taps.

Practical questions first, looks last. You get three floors with the reasons, and why the others didn't make it.

1 · Five tapsAbout a minute

Ben: Kids or pets at home?

YesNo

Ben: Any kitchen or bathroom in this job?

Kitchen or bathroomDry rooms only

Ben: Strong afternoon sun?

Yes, west-facingNot much

Belle: Which look are you after?

Belle: What's staying in the room?

Light woodWhiteDark wood or black

Ben · A kitchen or bathroom changes everything. Water counts three times, and carpet and laminate sit this one out.

Belle · Light wood staying? Go a shade warmer or a shade cooler than it, never the same.

2 · Your shortlistRanked from your answers. Nobody pays to be on it. Typical prices: the mid of our price levels, supplied and laid.

    Warm grey · 600 × 600 mm

Belle · Warm grey stays warm at night. Cool grey can turn blue under white lights.

    Light oak look · 1220 × 180 mm planks

Ben · Lays over sound tiles with no HDB permit. It's water-resistant, not waterproof, so a flood still matters.

  3. The same HDB-style living room with a generic polished marble-look porcelain, afternoon sun33D render

    Marble-look porcelain

    Typical S$115 to S$155 a sqm

    • copes with water

    • takes afternoon sun

    Polished · 1200 × 600 mm

Belle · Big slabs, few joints. A polished floor carries window light further into the room.

Why not the others

Engineered timber · Real wood: never leave it wet, and it can dent and scratch. Typical price for it: S$170 to S$230 per sqm (S$15.79 to S$21.37 per sq ft).

Solid parquet · Solid wood moves with our humidity and teak darkens in sun. Typical price for it: S$330 to S$450 per sqm (S$30.66 to S$41.81 per sq ft).

Laminate · Its joints are sensitive to moisture, so spills need wiping up straight away, and Egger says its surface can't be reworked.

Carpet tiles · Not waterproof: a spill that soaks through means lifting tiles to dry. Our view: keep it to bedrooms and studies.

3 · Your floor passport

Stamped and ready to take to a showroom.

See It Home · the light

It looked perfect in the store. Then it became hundreds of planks.

A sample is a few planks under shop lights. Your floor is the whole room, at every hour, next to your walls and your sofa. So we lay the whole floor and let you live with it.

Ben · Close, not exact. Stand on the real thing in your own light before you pay.
